The cost of inaction: Secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease in Asia-Pacific

The burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) across Asia-Pacific varies by country, but is nonetheless substantial. Collectively CVD is the leading or second-leading cause of death across the region and the prevalence continues to rise. Further, shifting demographics in the region—with both an increase in younger people experiencing CVD and ageing populations with multiple comorbidities—are putting health systems under increasing pressure.

Global business barometer

Sourcing and managing talent in a gig economy

The business case for a gig workforce is strong and its use is growing. Lower costs and greater flexibility would be an advantage in any environment. But in the age of disruption, when business models are overturned like rows of dominoes, they become a matter of survival. The evidence is found in a survey conducted by The Economist Intelligence Unit, sponsored by North Highland, of executive decision-makers at 210 US and UK companies with at least 2,000 employees.

The Cost of Silence

Cardiovascular diseases levy a substantial financial toll on individuals, their households and the public finances. These include the costs of hospital treatment, long-term disease management and recurring incidence of heart attacks and stroke. They also include the costs of functional impairment and knock-on costs as families may lose breadwinners or have to withdraw other family members from the workforce to care for a CVD patient.

The IPCC report: an insurmountable challenge or a global opportunity?

The latest report from the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change makes a compelling case for world leaders to strive to keep global temperature rises to within 1.5 degrees Celsius. Achieving such a target will require very challenging emission cuts across all economic sectors but recent progress provides a strong basis from which more ambitious action can be taken argues Nick Molho, executive director of the Aldersgate Group.

Intelligent Economies: AI's transformation of industries and society

Today AI is used by financial services companies to serve customers better and detect fraud; by healthcare providers to more accurately diagnose illness and identify more effective treatments; by manufacturers to keep machines up and running on the plant floor and to streamline supply chains; and by city authorities to track and mitigate urban challenges such as traffic, pollution and crime.  As AI becomes increasingly embedded in society, it will not only change the businesses that adopt it but also have significant economic, social and civic effects on citizens and consumers

Global Access to Healthcare

Access to healthcare is a key topic of debate worldwide. Countries are facing a range of healthcare challenges, from rising numbers of patients with multiple chronic diseases amid population ageing to providing access to new and innovative treatments that are also cost-effective. Healthcare systems must reconcile these challenges against a backdrop of already stretched budgets. As a result, the ability of populations to access the healthcare they need is increasingly under the spotlight.
