Research Methodology

In June 2012, the EIU conducted an online survey of 558 high-net-worth individuals, using a stratified sample that included 300 who say they live or work outside their country of birth or spend more than half of their time outside their home country. Survey findings from the latter group of IMWIs forms the basis for m ost of this report, while the 258 non-mobile respondents provide benchmarks for comparison. The EIU also conducted in-depth interviews with five survey respondents between September and October 2012.

While economic size and growth are important and necessary, several other factors help determine a city’s competitiveness as well, including its business and regulatory environment, the quality of human capital and cultural aspects. These factors not only help a city sustain high economic growth rates, but also create a stable and harmonious business and social environment.

In 1995, if a Western student hoped to have a business career in Asia, they were probably taking classes in Japanese—the language of the economic powerhouse of Asia. Twenty years on, a Westerner circulating at a conference in Shanghai and conversing in fluent Mandarin is not unusual enough to turn heads.
