Tim Smith has worked in the container shipping industry for more than 25 years, with much of that time in Asia. Initially with P&O Containers and then P&O Nedlloyd, Mr Smith has been with Maersk Line since their acquisition of P&O Nedlloyd in 2005.
Maersk Line is the liner shipping business within the Maersk Group. With a turnover in excess of US$27bn in 2013, Maersk Line operates more than 600 ships, has a fleet of more than 3m containers and is represented in more than 300 offices in 125 countries.
As chief executive of the North Asia region, Mr Smith is responsible for all aspects of Maersk Line’s business in Japan, Korea, China/Hong Kong and Taiwan, which together contribute more than 35% of the global Maersk Line throughput. Mr Smith graduated in 1985 from the University of Oxford with a BA (honours) first class in geography.
