Artificial Intelligence will indeed transform the industries described above and others. However, it will require an unprecedented build-out of an entire range of new technologies to make it part of our daily lives.

Artificial Intelligence is most powerful when it draws from a multitude of devices, data sources and advanced analytics. Imagine the rapid creation of an anti-virus based on the simultaneous analysis of data from early cases of flu in Europe, and clinical trials in
the US, and lab tests in Japan. This is data that will be drawn from multiple devices, operating systems and data bases across the globe.

This scale of information processing will also demand a new era of computational power. Even a relatively simple AI computation will need to draw at will from tens of thousands of computers and servers across the globe. Theoretically, AI could mine up to 44 zettabytes (each zettabyte is one sextillion bytes) of data by 2020 – a ten-fold increase from 2013. This includes an unprecedented volume of raw, unstructured data that will need to be integrated and analysed in real time.

Clearly, the transformation of industries by AI is not even imaginable without the pervasiveness, lowered computing costs and computational power of cloud computing. Just as cloud is enabling artificial intelligence, so will AI shape the future of cloud. Imagine “Artificial Intelligence as a Service”, in which cognitive computational power is provided on-demand. Or “AI as a platform”, providing access to
oceans of raw data to support any given analysis. The next generation of cloud computing may even be designed with the help of AI analytics and self-learning networks.

The industry transformations outlined above are just the beginning. Cloud-based artificial intelligence is coming fast, and will reshape industries and lives as never before.
