This report, written by the EIU and sponsored by CA Technologies, surveyed 377executives from start-ups, enterprises and governments to examine both the state of the app economy and the optimal role that governments have in growing app-based businesses. Many government respondents view app companies as an important driver of economic and job growth in their nations, regions or localities. In fact, seven of the ten government officials in this survey, believe this app start-ups have had this impact in their jurisdictions. The app ecosystem, which encompasses many different entities - from start-ups to larger enterprises and governments - is representative of a country's broader technology innovation ecosystem.

Key findings:

  • The US has few peers as the best business environment for app companies
  • Governments are active ecosystems players, from improving public infrastructure to providing appropriate social support for employees
  • Start-up and government respondents differ on how effective the latter's support is. Enterprise respondents, too, believe that government can do better
