Earlier this month a subset of the EIU’s funding tracker became the official ACT Accelerator Funding Commitment Tracker. The tracker is developed in partnership with the ACT Accelerator co-conveners and is hosted on the WHO website. The interactive visualisation presents funding commitments made against the four pillars of the global initiative: vaccines, therapeutics, diagnostics and health systems, showing both the source and recipient organisation for each funding item. Historical funding trends can also be viewed, dating back to March 2020.
At the end of January 2021, the total funding commitments amounted to US$ 6.0 billion, with an additional US$ 4 billion in projected funding announced by the United States on 28 December 2020.
News reports from 9 February 2021 revealed that the German government plans to provide additional funding of US$ 1.8 billion to the Access to COVID-19 Tools Accelerator (ACT Accelerator). Just under half of this funding will be used for the procurement and distribution of vaccines to low- and middle-income countries, and the remaining funds will be allocated to vaccine research, therapeutics, diagnostics, and the strengthening of health systems.
While these additional funding commitments are quite significant, a funding gap of over US$ 20 billion still remains according to the ACT Accelerator Urgent Priorities & Financing Requirements report published in November 2020.
