A The Economist Intelligence Unit criou o Escore Latino-Americano do Controle do Câncer (Latin America Cancer Control Scorecard, LACCS) para avaliar as políticas e programas de controle do câncer em 12 países da região. O LACCS mostrou que diversos países criaram ou fortaleceram seus Planos Nacionais de Controle do Câncer. No entanto, de modo geral, os planos não são suficientemente abrangentes e carecem de financiamento. Também houve progresso na implementação de registros de dados sobre o câncer na população, mas os problemas com a qualidade e a abrangência dos dados persistem. Outras áreas com espaço para melhorias incluem as altas taxas de diagnóstico em estágios avançados, a insuficiência de recursos para as necessidades atuais e futuras nos cuidados ao câncer, a fragmentação dos sistemas de saúde e as desigualdades no acesso aos cuidados médicos.
