US approves $3.5 billion in emergency funding for the Global Fund’s effort to fight the COVID-19 pandemic in low- and middle-income countries

The new funding for the comes from the US$11 billion global COVID-19 response package that is part of the American Rescue Plan Act signed into law by President Biden on 11 March 2021.

As one of the founding partners of the , the Global Fund is co-leading the Diagnostics Pillar with the Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND) and the Health Systems Connector with the World Bank and WHO. With this new funding, the Global Fund will support low- and middle-income countries to expand their testing capacity and ensure health care workers are adequately protected with personal protective equipment.

Ensuring equitable access to tests, treatments, and vaccines in every country is the fastest way to end the pandemic and create stronger health systems that can withstand future challenges. And last but not least, this funding will ensure that the gains the Global Fund has made against HIV, tuberculosis and malaria over the last two decades will be protected from the healthcare service disruptions seen during the pandemic.
