Plan to accelerate the end of the COVID-19 pandemic is created at two high-level global health meetings

At the hosted by the European Commission and Italy in Rome on 21 May, G20 leaders showed a strong commitment to action to end the pandemic. Many speakers emphasised the need to take actions now, and not in three months, or six months. The adopted at the summit re-affirmed the main principles of multilateralism, global solidarity and equity for the global response efforts to end the pandemic.

Countries and international organisations emphasised the need for additional funding to the and committed support to the mechanism to ensure faster and more equitable access to vaccines around the world. This included a funding pledge by Italy for EUR 300 million to the COVAX AMC. Further commitments were made for vaccine dose sharing by France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, Spain and Switzerland. However, to ensure that COVAX’s goal of procuring 1.8 billion COVID-19 vaccine doses for lower-income economies in 2021 can be reached a lot more needs to be done.

The which ended on 31 May, continued the discussions from the Global Health Summit. The heads of the International Monetary Fund, World Bank Group, World Health Organization and World Trade Organization estimated that urgent additional financing of US$50 billion is required for the equitable distribution of COVID-19 tools, as well as setting the foundations of a global economic recovery and improving health security for the future.

The roadmap to end the pandemic includes a call for action to:

  • Vaccinate at least 30% of the population in all countries by the end of this year, and at least 60% by the first half of 2022.
  • Invest in additional vaccine production capacity and diversifying production to regions with little current capacity to insure against risks posed by new variants.
  • Enhance testing and tracing, oxygen supplies, therapeutic and public health measures in all countries in parallel with ramping up vaccine deployment.
