Global alignment is key to addressing the complex challenges posed by long Covid.

In 2024, Economist Impact convened an international Advisory Council to reach a consensus on how long Covid should be defined, understood and addressed globally. Guided by the findings of An incomplete picture: understanding the burden of long Covid, the Advisory Council set out to:

  • Endorse a systematic, multifaceted and comprehensive approach to addressing long Covid.
  • Advocate for improved coordination amongst various stakeholders to develop a common framework and definition for long Covid, enhance research efforts and treatment development, promote better diagnosis and symptom management, and implement best practice policies.
  • Urge decision-makers to recognise the valuable insights of key stakeholders, including patients, families, carers and healthcare providers, and actively engage them in the strategy development and implementation.

Advisory Council members unanimously ratified the Consensus statement of the long Covid Advisory Council in September 2024. The Consensus statement outlines key recommendations for mitigating the consequences of long Covid, bridging gaps in understanding and ensuring support for individuals affected by this condition. Key areas of opportunity include:

  • Revisions to nomenclature;
  • Alignment on a common definition;
  • Development of comprehensive policy;
  • Expanded and sustained research; and
  • Guidelines for symptom management.
