The wealthy migrant is a study of high net worth individuals (HNWIs) who have relocated to another country, acquired a new citizenship, or plan to do either of these. The focus of the research is the motivations of these groups of HNWIs for relocating to another country or for acquiring a new nationality, and the specific factors that influence their choice of destination country. For the purposes of this research, HNWIs are defined as individuals with investable assets of US$1m or more (excluding real estate).

Key findings include:

  • HNWIs are migrating in ever-larger numbers, in search of financial or professional advantages, a more secure environment, or a better quality of life.
  • Wealthy migrants tend to be motivated by quality-of-life considerations, including safety, and by a wish to improve opportunities for their children.
  • The factors governing the choice of a specific country vary between the migrants and those seeking an additional nationality. The migrants are primarily interested in better business opportunities, a favourable tax environment and greater freedom to travel. The multiple passport-holders are looking mainly for ease of obtaining the additional nationality.
